Valparaiso after the Earthquake
We only experience a big scare! The night of Saturday, February 27, 2010 was cut short for most citizens of Valparaiso. From 3:34 am nobody could close their eyes. For more than three minutes shook the city with an intensity of 7 degrees on the Richter scale. Eternal minutes that did not want to end, but the after shocks were of less intense. Without electricity and with the moon setting we were left in complete darkness. As dawn approached we waited for the telephones to work to contact our family and friends. From portable radios we heard the first news, ground Zero was in the south, the regions of Maule was hit by a 8.8 earthquake in the Richter scale and was in ruins. We thought 7 on the Richter scale were hard enough imagine 8.8.

That Saturday was dangerous to leave the house, but uncertainty moved us to go find out what had happen to out town, relatives and friends. Our first walk about was “El Plan” the flat area of Valparaiso , it was devastating. Façades were broken, windows were shattered on the floor and the pier sank 40cm. That was all the damage barely nothing; however it did not end there. After the electricity was restored we saw the first images on TV. We saw what had happen in the south of Chile . We knew than that we had suffered a small scare in comparison.

The earthquake and tsunami that hit the cities in the south from Talca to Concepcion and the entire coast area were destroyed. We are speaking of the coastal stripe from Llolleo, south of the Port of San Antonio , to the south of Concepcion. Perplexity evades us and the compassion for the people in these regions is immense. Here in Valparaiso from the beginning of the week we have started to live our life as usual and because of that we have had the time to process the event and the urge for solidarity and help has surface in all of us. Unity, camaraderie and support has surface in all of us in the city, this makes you realize that we have only suffered a big scare.

28/02 the busses to the north, Santiago and busses to Mendoza are working without delay.

01/03 all the businesses and commerce have reopen.

03/03 all museums as well as “La Sebastiana” are open.

Valparaíso nach dem Erdebeben:

Wir sind mit dem Schrecken davongekommen! Die Nacht zum 27.02.2010 war widererwartend kurz für die Einwohner Valparaísos. Nach 03:34 Uhr hat kaum noch jemand ein Auge zu gemacht. Über drei Minuten erschütterte ein Erdbeben mit der Stärke sieben (Richterskala) die Stadt. Nicht enden wollende Minuten! Danach die mehr oder weniger starken Nachbeben. Kein Strom, Dunkelheit und als der Vollmond dann auch noch unterging: alles düster! Jeder wartete auf die Dämmerung sowie Strom und funktionierende Telefonnetze, um sich nach Familie und Freunden zu erkundigen. Aus batteriebetriebenen Radios die ersten Nachrichten: Das Epizentrum lag im Süden und erschütterte die Region um Talca mit Stärke 8.8 (Richterskala).

Wir dachten: Sieben war schon viel! Es war gefährlich die Häuser zu verlassen, aber die Unruhe trieb uns am Samstagvormittag raus. Wir wollten wissen, wie es um unsere Stadt steht. Der erste Rundgang in der Unterstadt hat uns überrascht: Fassadenteile sind von Häusern gefallen, Fenster zerborsten, die Mole im Hafen hat sich um 40 cm gesenkt. Und mehr nicht!? Aber es war doch so heftig!

Als uns dann die ersten Bilder aus dem zentralen Süden erreichten, wussten wir, dass wir wirklich mit dem Schrecken davon gekommen sind. Das Erdbeben und der nachfolgende Tsunami haben ganze Städte und Dörfer im Süden dem Boden gleichgemacht! Die Betroffenheit darüber und das Mitgefühl für die Menschen dort sind groß. Das Leben hier in Valparaíso hat sich so weit normalisiert und Hilfsaktionen sowie Initiativen, die seit Beginn der Woche hier in Valpo angelaufen sind, haben uns aus der Lähmung geholt. Hier und da hört man auch schon Menschen lachen, sicher auch aus der Erleichterung, dass wir wirklich mit dem Schrecken davongekommen sind.

- Seit dem 28.02. war die Busverbindung zwischen Valparaíso nach Santiago und Mendoza soweit normalisiert.
- Abreisen von Valparaíso in den Norden verlaufen wie üblich
- Seit dem 01.03. sind so gut wie alle Geschäfte wieder geöffnet
- Seit dem 03.03. sind Musen wie „La Sebastiana“ wieder geöffnet
